Description

Description

The life of the ambitious Midlands landowner Sir Thomas Stanhope (c.1540-1596), who enjoyed the patronage of Chief Minister, Lord Burghley, but ended his life in debt largely as a result of building his house in Shelford. As a magistrate, he was expected to enforce anti-Catholic legislation, he had many public quarrels with other local families such as the Willoughbys of Wollaton and he was often at odds with his wife and two of his sons. His life story told here also gives a picture of local life in Elizabethan times. 382pp illus.
