Description
During the 1820s and 1830s, Nottinghamshire witnessed a number of dramatic episodes in its political and social history and Godfrey Tallents (1812-1877), a Newark solicitor, recorded these in his diaires. These diaries provide a vivid testimony converning the Reform Bill Riots of 1831, the turbulent electoral history of Newark, the early political experience of William Ewart Gladston and the administration of law and order in the county. They also illustrate the busy round of social and legal engagements which Tallents pursued in the first decade of his professional life. 104pp A4 format, illus.
