Description
This combines in one volume two pamphlets: To the Castle! and Damn his Charity! originally published by Nottingham & Notts Radical History Group in 2010 & 2011.
Damn his Charity! examines the story behind a riot in 1766 at Nottingham’s Goose Fair when large cheeses were snatched and rolled down Wheeler Gate and Peck Lane, apparently bowling over the mayor, setting it within the context of the wave of Food Riots which took place that autumn.
To the Castle! discusses the identities and motives of the rioters responsible for burning down Nottingham Castle during the Reform Riots of 1831 and looks at living and working conditions in general in early nineteenth century Nottingham. 172pp, illus., refs.
