Description
On holiday at an English seaside resort, Edwin Fisher is trying to come to terms with the breakdown of his marriage to Meg after the death of their baby son. However, Meg’s parents are also staying in the the same town and are keen to help them patch up their relationship. As Edwin seeks to understand what went wrong, he must confront the past and decide upon his future. This is an extremely subtle story, a consummate portrait of English provincial life told with all Stanley Middleton’s artistry and depth of feeling. It was joint winner of the Booker Prize in 1974. 240pp
