Description
The Journal of Grace Jane Dexter 1884-1893 who was born in Caroline Street, Nottingham and began work aged fourteen as a pupil teacher in Sneinton Board School. In 1885 she was befriended by Florence Nightingale who continued to correspond with her and encourage her as she struggled against the odds to qualify as a certificated teacher. This and the details of daily life, people and books which influenced her, observations of social injustice and events like Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, all combine to make it an important historic document. 88pp
