Description
A series of old photographs with explanatory text.
Vintage Worksop pubs such as the Travellers Rest in Gateford Road and the Fox Inn on Lowtown Street appear in this fine collection of mostly Edwardian pictures. Industry is represented by the Worksop & Retford Brewery buildings, Shaw’s wire rope factory and Priory Mill, which burnt down in 1912. Pictures of Sparken Hill show it when it was lined by woods and fields, rather than houses. The impressive Victorian architecture of Worksop’s main shopping streets is shown off in several shots of Market Place, Bridge Street and Newcastle Avenue, and there’s a good view of the ornate Electric Theatre, one of the town’s former cinemas. 48pp
