These ten short stories are a selection made from three volumes of stories that Dorothy Whipple published in her lifetime. Five of them were read on BBC Radio 4 in October 2007.

Dorothy Whipple lived in Nottingham from 1917 after her marriage to her husband, Henry, but returned to her home town of Blackburn after his death in 1958 and died there in 1966.
