A Black Violet by G.J. Martin

isbn 9780993189258 Colley Books, 2016

Beneath Napoleon's Hat: Tales from the Parisian Cafes: Volume 2.

Second in a series of stories or plaquettes of indeterminate length; some too long to be short stories and some too short to be novels, but all set in Parisian cafés in the past famous for their writers and literary connections.

The address of this plaquette is 7 rue de L'Odeon.  There was a bookshop there, La Maison des Amis des Livres, owned by Adrienne Monnier, who offered coffee and cake to her many visitors hence the shop has been accorded the honorary status of cafe.  It is there we meet the "Black Violet", Raymonde Linossier, lover, friend, barrister, orientalist and writer.  The poet, Leon-Paul Fargue, guided her through the streets of Paris while Francis Poulenc modified his music to please her taste and dedicated pieces to her memory. Raymonde somehow created a meteoric trail to her life, yet exists in history as a shadow appearing most vividly in the memories of other.  this story goes in search of Leon-Paul Fargue's "black violet", Adrienne Monnier's "beautiful feminine soul" and Francis Poulenc's "poor bluebird of Vichy".
