Emma's Sketchbook: Scenes of Nottinghamshire Life in the 1840s edited by Richard A. Gaunt

isbn 9780902751743  Nottinghamshire County Council, 2013

Emma Wilmot, (1820 -1898), a cousin of Charles Darwin, was married to Edward Wilmot, a land agent of the Duke of Newcastle. Emma was an accomplished artist and spent the early years of her marriage sketching the scenes around her home near Worksop. The sketches  cover such diverse subjects as architecture, nature, animals and rural life and together they offer an evocative insight into Nottinghamshire during the early-Victorian period.  Over fifty of the drawings are reproduced here for the first time.  This book also contains biographical details and places Emma's life and interests in their historical context. 78pp
