SOME MARCH ANNIVERSARIES

March 4th 1918  The first case of Spanish Flu was reported in the USA.

Catherine Arnold traces the course of the disease, its origins and progress through the accounts of those who experienced it in Pandemic 1918.

 

 

 

 

March 8th is International Women’s Day

Two women who played a part in Nottingham’s history were Florence Paton, the city’s first woman member of parliament and Helen Kirkpatrick Watts, a prominent suffragette.

         

 

March 12th 1984  Following on from the  Yorkshire miners’ strike which began on March 5th, this day marked the start of the National Miners’ Strike, which lasted until the following year and left communities divided.

  The diary of John Lowe who was at the forefront of the fight for jobs during the twelve months of the miners’ strike as the elected chairman of Clipstone Colliery’s strike committee in the largely working county of Nottinghamshire.
