SHERWOOD FOREST - THE MINER2MAJOR PROJECT

Miner2Major is a five-year Landscape Partnership Scheme supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund which focusses on the heart of the Sherwood Forest area from Bestwood to Ollerton, and Mansfield to Rufford Abbey.

One of the aims of the project is to identify, record and research buildings of historic interest in the area and to increase local knowledge about them. The following publications have been produced as part of this project.

The country house stables of the Sherwood Forest region are fine works of architectural significance and are a reminder of the significant role the horse played in the history of Nottinghamshire’s country estates.

The period 1850-1950 saw the landscape of Sherwood change dramatically, mines were sunk, railway lines built, and new towns and villages created. This project will help to better tell the stories of this period of change.

Horses and ponies were employed in the mines from the 1750s spending 50 weeks of the year in darkness.  Their accommodations below ground have gone largely unrecorded but this now examines how they were constructed from newly recorded oral accounts and from photographic evidence.

The colliery villages reflect the evolution of mining in Nottinghamshire and the ambition of the colliery companies who built them, the most impressive developments happening in the 1920s.
